In Japanese there are 3 words to designate a place ここ, そこ, あそこ. We use them depending on the distance of the subject:

if the subject is close to the person speaking then we will use ここ

if the subject is close to the listener then we we will use そこ

and in case the subject is far from both then it will be あそこ.
